HOW MINDFULNESS EMPOWERS US

An Animation Narrated by Sharon Salzberg

Mindfulness allows us to see our thoughts and feelings as they really are, freeing us from old ways of thinking.  Below is an excellent video by Sharon Salzberg.

With mindfulness we can choose what we will strengthen and bring into action and we can choose what we will gently let go of. We are empowered!

Want to know more about Mindfulness and how it can help you? Then watch this short animation.

This animation is also a great tool to show your kids what mindfulness really is.

LIFE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE WONDERFUL TO BE PERFECT

A while ago, I wrote an article on my other blog, ThePowertobeHappy.com about how life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful. Today, I would like to share it with you Warriors!

Some days do you wake up and wonder , "Just what am I doing? Is this all worth it?"  Working hard to make a living, trying to blend into the "rat-race," shuffling the kids back and forth between activities and sports, with barely any free time for yourself.  I know, I do!
Blue Box
There are just some days when I feel down and "blue" and can't see the silver lining. This tends to happen on Monday mornings or when things aren't going my way (fast enough.)
It is usually when I am in my "own little world," not really participating productively in society, that I let myself get trapped in that "blue box."

Life can sometimes seem like one disappointment after another, but really, if we change our lens, and look at all the good and positive things in our lives, it can and will change our perspective.  It is so important to have a goal, to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.
Even though, I do wake up some days feeling like something is wrong with the entire world, I've learned that "life doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful."  I have learned that in moments like this, that's when it's time to make the EXTRA effort to get out and do something positive.  I have learned that three people have the power to make me happy: Me, Myself & I!

That's right only YOU and I, individually, have the power to make ourselves happy.  And remember, life doesn't have to be perfect all the time, you just have to recognize and appreciate what you do have and show gratitude everyday for it!  This does not mean you are going to float around like "Mary Poppins" every day but it will help you will start your day off with a little more pizzazz and appreciation for the life you live, especially when you have dreams and goals to pursue.

Here is a list of things I want to share with you, that you may want to try to help you get back into the "swing of things."  Remember, YOU always have the power to be happy.

"What you think, you attract!"

10 TIPS TO BOOST YOUR DAY(S) INTO A HAPPY DAY(S):

1. Make a list of all the things you love and appreciate in your life (look at this list and remember it!)
2. Make a conscious effort to schedule time to do sometime YOU enjoy (art, crafts, yoga, write etc...)
3. Treat yourself to your favorite lunch or dinner.
4. Call or visit an old friend - sometimes the best therapy is just talking to someone you trust or like.
5. Find a way to laugh, whether it's listening to jokes (audio) or going to a comedy show.
6. Read something inspiring and motivational.
7. Start a fun or creative project. Something that you’re excited about, that will make you smile.
8. Write about how you feel, whether you have a blog or not. Talk about the things that make you feel
down or upset. Whether you share it or not, is not the point. It is cathartic to write out
your feelings. Post it, don’t post it, whatever you choose to do, just get it out of your system.
9.  Watch that movie that you've wanted to see for a while now, even if it's requires getting a sitter.
10. Go for a walk, somewhere were you can appreciate nature (tree, beach, mountain, by a lake etc...)

These are just a few things you can do to help you get a jump-start to your happy frame of mind.   Everyday will not always be good but you can definitely find the good in every day.  You are attracting what you think on a daily basis.  You have the power...use it wisely!

Follow your dreams, set a goal, one day at a time.  The key is to find your purpose or your passion and life will become more exhilarating every day!

HOW TO MAKE THE ANCIENT DRINK OF "GOLDEN MILK"

TURMERIC GOLDEN MILK RECIPE
Turmeric is a golden-yellow spice originally from India.
Get high-quality Turmeric Powder at your local health food store.   It is one of my favorite all-time, remedies for many different ailments. It can be used as an anti-inflammatory for people suffering from arthritis, joint pain, and muscle pain.   Personally, I used it to help myself with a case of pleurisy, I had that lasted almost 2 months. When nothing else seemed to work, I turned to this paste and in 3-4 days I was fine. (Note: all results are different and this is not medical advise. Always check with your healthcare provider if you have a serious medical condition.)  Turmeric paste may also help aid in digestion, and works as an anti-parasitic, and anti-bacterial.

INGREDIENTS:  (to make the paste)
How to make Golden Paste:
½ cup turmeric powder
1 cup spring water (+ ½ extra if necessary)
1.5 tsp ground black pepper*

(Why add Black Pepper? It is beneficial to take black pepper with turmeric because it helps the body absorb turmeric.A 1992 report in Clinical Pharmacokinetics on black pepper explained why some studies did not show the same benefits of turmeric as the others did. The human body has a tough time utilizing curcumin effectively.  However just a small amount of black pepper boosted bio-availability of curcumin by up to 2000%, the study shows.)

Cook this paste for 7-9 minutes.

The Golden Paste is a turmeric-based paste that taken orally provides health benefits to humans as well as animals (dogs and horses). Turmeric, known for is anti-inflammatory properties and used medicinally for over 4,000 years, is excellent for arthritis, skin health, digestion, immune system, and even cancer. Recent studies have confirmed that it may be as effective as 14 different prescription drugs – without the adverse side effects.

After you have the actual Turmeric paste, you can turn it into a tea or "Golden Milk." (Personally, I used Almond Milk for flavor.)

How to Make Golden Milk:
1 teaspoon of organic coconut oil
1/4 teaspoon of turmeric paste
1 cup of almond milk
Organic, raw, unfiltered honey for taste

Directions:
Mix all the ingredients together over medium heat except the honey. Do not allow it to boil. Add a bit of honey for taste (after) and drink as soon as it is cool enough.

See video for instructions:

A 2010 peer-reviewed a research article published in The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology concluded that “the various effects of curcumin has been widely studied in Western systems of medicine for decades, and has been found to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Considering that inflammation plays a major role in most chronic illnesses, anti-inflammatory agents are needed for prevention purposes. Because curcumin inhibits multiple pro-inflammatory pathways and is affordable, this phyto-chemical should be further explored for prevention and treatment of various chronic diseases.”

Turmeric and Arthritis: In traditional Chinese and Indian Ayurveda medicine, turmeric is used to treat arthritis. A 2006 study found the turmeric helps reduce join inflammation. A different study from the same year found turmeric to have anti-arthritic effect. And a 2012 study provided evidence that curcumin might even be more effective for rheumatoid arthritis than anti-inflammatory drugs.

Turmeric for Digestive Issues: Curcumin stimulates the gallbladder to produce more bile, which may aid digestion. The German Commission E, a scientific advisory board equivalent to the FDA, approved turmeric for digestive problems.

A 2006 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found curcumin helpful for keeping ulcerative colitis in remission. And a 2013 paper concluded that curcumin is “a very promising new therapeutic option for the treatment of gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases for which present therapies are largely unsatisfactory.”

Turmeric as First Aid: Turmeric can be used to treat wounds, cuts, rashes, bruises, insect bites, and swelling. A 2014 article from Life Sciences concluded that topical application of curcumin has a great therapeutic effect on skin wounds. Also, a 2006 study concluded that it accelerated wound healing.

WHO WILL PLUCK YOUR NOSE HAIRS?

Sometimes, just sometimes, the vain part of me takes over. Now, I am aware that the greatest blessing in life is to have good health but I couldn't help it as I got out of the shower today and looked in the mirror, and realized, my eyebrows are looking like a uni-brow, my lips look like I have a mustache and oh, that nose hair! I thought, "Ughh, I'm getting old. When in the world did that happen? "  Obviously, it's time for a waxing appointment but the nose hair thing. That killed me.

Now, I don't consider myself a vain person (really, I don't) but there are some things I worry about as I get older.  Not that I am totally over the hill yet, but let's face it, I am not 25 anymore!  Let's just say, I want to be "forever 39."

A couple of years ago when I worked with senior citizens in my last "corporate" job in property management, I use to see what were once beautiful women, slowly turn into frail and disheveled looking old people.  Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a lot of them but the ones I did see deteriorate, were quite depressing to witness.  I could see the decline from the moment they moved into to the senior housing building.  Most of them, had outlived their relatives and sadly, some of the ones with relatives, never had visitors.

The thought of growing old and not having family to come visit, made me extremely sad.  I know every picture tells a story, so who knows why some of these people did not have visitors, but still...

I thought, who helps them get dressed?  Who helps them with the things that once mattered, for example, to a woman, like coloring her hair and plucking her eyebrows and looking impeccable?  Do these things no longer matter when you get old?  It is true, it all depends on the person and their personality and how important looks are (or were to them.)  All I know, is I don't want to be that old

lady in a recliner full of  grays everywhere with a
nose full of hair. I mean really, who wants that?  Sounds shallow I know, but admit it, you wouldn't want it either!

I guess, if you are really lucky and treat your children well, especially your daughters, someday, they will be around to help you out with this, if this is the kind of thing that matters to you.

All I know, is that today, when I stood in front of the mirror, all I good think of was, "Geez, who in the world is going to pluck my  nose hairs when I grow old?!"  (As the Carly Simon tune, "You're So Vain," played in my head!)
